Big mistake on the Internet World Stats is an International website
Posted on Tuesday, August 17, 2010 by Hai Le
I so surprised when I access internetworldstats.com. On the "Top 20 countries with the highest number of users" table, Vietnam became Vietnem. It's a serious mistake. I don't know why?
We know that, Internet World Stats is an International website is very useful where we can find a lot of information such as Internet Usage, Population Statistics and Internet Market Research Data, for over 233 individual countries and world regions.
Now, we can believe Internet World Stats is an International website anymore?

Facebook Commanded 41percent of Social Media Traffic
Posted on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 by Hai Le

Facebook and YouTube are displacing rivals and taking over the social web, according to data we’ve just received from comScore.
In addition to showing massive and continued traffic growth throughout 2009 and the beginning of 2010, Facebook and YouTube (
) continued to capture the highest volume of social web traffic. Twitter (
) also garnered a ton of mainstream attention, helping the company increase the number of visitors to its site by fivefold over the course of the year.

Taking a look at the unique visitors charts, we see the widespread migration from MySpace (
) to Facebook even more clearly. As of March 2010, Facebook traffic made up 41% of all traffic on a list of popular social destinations. MySpace was in second place, capturing around 24% of traffic. Gmail (
) had 15%, and Twitter had 8%. However, during the same period in 2009, MySpace was in the lead with 38% of site visits over Facebook’s 33%.

While Gmail continues to show slow year-over-year growth and sites such as LinkedIn (
) and Twitter experienced exponential gains over the course of the past 12 months, MySpace’s traffic has been completely stagnant. Facebook, on the other hand, has exhibited strong growth and high volumes of traffic. Take a look at the difference between site traffic in March 2009 and March 2010 for these social sites:

The 7 Least Used Facebook Features
Posted on Saturday, March 20, 2010 by Hai Le
Posted by Neil Vidyarthi on March 15th, 2010 3:41 PM

If you look at the ’share box’ at the top of any wall, you can see the arrow that allows you to post special attachments along with your post. The defaults are photo, video, calendar entry and URL. These are definitely coming into use, but application wall post attachments are not. Any application, such as SuperPoke, can be attached through the special area, but there are a series of steps to go through before you can attach pokes to your wall post. I don’t see this catching on any time soon.
We all got a new interface with the redesign, and the news feed was one of the biggest changes. What we don’t see is that the default sorting method for our news feed is the “top news” method. There is another method called “most recent”, where you’re able to view all the news feed items of all your friends in chronological order. Wait, isn’t that what top news is? The answer is no: top news uses Facebook’s social algorithms to determine news that will likely be relevant to you, based on various factors which likely include who you communicate with on Facebook.
Friends lists are interesting because they seemed as if they would be the perfect response to the masses of uesrs that complain about their news feed being unusable. By adding friends to a list and setting it as your default, you can filter out the news feed entries from people you’re not interested in. That said, the interface to actually add and remove friends from a list can be a bit clunky, and somehow the feature hasn’t caught on amongst most users. People I talk to often complain that their Facebook news feed has gotten so irrelevant to them that they barely use it and will probably quit altogether, and when I inform them about friends lists the response is usually “Wow, I had no idea that existed.”
Facebook constantly updates their social network to include and remove features, a case in point being their recentremoval of application spam Facebook notifications. We’re all familiar with the changes that actually made a difference - the news feed, the redesign, the “like” button - but we thought it’d be interesting to look at those lesser-known features in Facebook… you know, the ones that people probably never use.
Pokes
I used to get at least 10 pokes a day. Now I get about one a week. You may be thinking that this could be a result of my slow decline in popularity, and you definitely could be right. But it’s also important to note that pokes are barely used by anybody I know as well. When Facebook did their redesign, they took Pokes out of the spotlight, and pokes now appear in a small box way down the right side of the page. Combine that with the number of big, popular applications and big flashy news feeds, and it looks like pokes are about to go the way of the dodo.

Boxes
When the Facebook redesign kicked off, one of the biggest changes was that applications, which once used to house their ‘boxes’ on a user’s main page, were kicked off into their own tab labeled “Boxes”. This is a mandatory tab, where applications’ profile boxes appear. A box is something that can contain a user’s top score in a game, or their latest activity, or just a cool photo from a photography application. Unfortunately, in the entire history of the new redesign, I have never found myself interested in looking at my or anyone else’s box at all. The idea is sound, but the end result is a cacophony of random images and information that really doesn’t convey a clear image of a person’s application habits or application scores.

Tabs
Tabs in general were an exciting idea when they were released, but somehow haven’t gained the traction that many thought they would. Their prominent position on people’s pages means that you’d think that they’d have more use than they do, but other than flipping to the “photos” tab, I don’t see much use of them. Specifically, applications have the ability to create custom tabs for their game, which seems like a great idea, but hasn’t been executed yet in a way that users seem to embrace. I had anticipated that game makers like Playfish would attempt to make a “Playfish tab” which would have a summary of users’ successes in all their games, but with recent moves like the “games dashboard”, it seems like Facebook will summarize the games themselves and users would be even less to use the Playfish tab.
Notes
Notes, while not ever particularly used, enjoyed a brief resurgence with the recent “25 Random Things About Me” phenomena, where users would post notes talking about their own random personal traits. The idea caught on in Facebook and spread everywhere until people got tired of them and I realized that two-thirds of my friends think “I Love Lost” constitutes a ‘random thing”. With the end of the fad, so ended the use of notes. I have yet to see a single note since the trend, and in fact Facebook’s “comments” system and expanded wall means that even extended tirades can be posted within the regular Facebook wall and comment system.
Application Wall Post Attachments
If you look at the ’share box’ at the top of any wall, you can see the arrow that allows you to post special attachments along with your post. The defaults are photo, video, calendar entry and URL. These are definitely coming into use, but application wall post attachments are not. Any application, such as SuperPoke, can be attached through the special area, but there are a series of steps to go through before you can attach pokes to your wall post. I don’t see this catching on any time soon.
Recent News
We all got a new interface with the redesign, and the news feed was one of the biggest changes. What we don’t see is that the default sorting method for our news feed is the “top news” method. There is another method called “most recent”, where you’re able to view all the news feed items of all your friends in chronological order. Wait, isn’t that what top news is? The answer is no: top news uses Facebook’s social algorithms to determine news that will likely be relevant to you, based on various factors which likely include who you communicate with on Facebook.

Internet Users Spend 13 Hours/Week Online
Posted on Monday, December 28, 2009 by Hai Le
Adult internet users in the US are now spending an average of 13 hours a week online, and half of adult internet users have purchased something online in the last month, according tothe results from a recent poll from Harris Interactive.
Online Time Increases Over Years
The Harris Poll found that over the years the average number of hours spent online has increased from seven hours in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002, to between eight and nine hours in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006.
In 2007, weekly time online increased to 11 hours. Last year (in October after the financial crisis broke and before the presidential election) internet users were online for 14 hours per week, double the amount of time spent 1999 to 2002, the poll found.
Online Time a Factor of Age
Despite these high overall usage numbers, people’s usage still varies greatly, said Harris Interactive. The poll revealed that one in five (20%) adult internet users are online for only two hours or less a week while one in seven (14%) are spending 24 or more hours a week online.
Not surprisingly, the tendency to be online varies by age. The age groups that spend the most time online are those ages 30-39 (18 hours) and those aged 25-29 (17 hours) and 40-49 (17 hours):
Half Purchase Online
Half (50%) of all those online bought something on the internet in the last month. This includes 62% of those ages 30-39 and 56% of those ages 40-49.
184 Million Online
The number of adults online, now 184 million (80%), has not changed significantly since 2008 and 2007, noted Harris Interactive. This includes those online at work, at home, at school or any other locations. However, the number of adults who are online at home has increased to 76% this year, and 75% last year, compared with 70% in 2006, and 66% in 2005.
Harris Interactive noted that the increase in the number of hours spent online in the last two years compared with all previous years is striking and likely reflects a growing ability to use the internet, an increase in sites and applications, increased TV watching online and increased purchasing online. Hours online also may have increased because of the recession, since going online is, in many cases, more economical than going out.
About the poll: This Harris Poll was conducted by telephone within the US July 7-12 and October 13-18, 2009 among 2,029 adults (ages 18+). Figures for age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, region, number of adults in the household, number of phone lines in the household were weighted where necessary to bring them into line with their actual proportions in the population.

What Twitter and Facebook’s 2009 Trends Tell Us About Ourselves
Posted on Sunday, December 27, 2009 by Hai Le
December 27th, 2009 | by Ben Parr
The Social Analyst is a weekly column by Mashable Co-Editor Ben Parr, where he digs into social media trends and how they are affecting companies in the space.
As the year comes to a close, several social media companies decided to take a look back and reflect on the events, people, technologies that captured our interest this year. Twitter took the first crack when it revealed the most discussed topics of 2009. Facebook was next when it released itsFacebook Memology for the year.
Both reports are interesting and have a lot of useful information, yet nobody’s really taken the time to analyze just what these trends mean. What did our society care about, and why? What scared the crap out of us? How were our tastes different this year than they were last year?
While I could take days analyzing trending topics (weeks if you give me the raw data), I only have so much time for this column. This is why I wanted to share with you some of my conclusions about this year’s trend data from Facebook and Twitter.
While I could take days analyzing trending topics (weeks if you give me the raw data), I only have so much time for this column. This is why I wanted to share with you some of my conclusions about this year’s trend data from Facebook and Twitter.
First, A Recap of Facebook and Twitter’s Top Trends of 2009
Before you start reading this week’s column, please make sure to take a good, long look at this year’s top trends for Facebook and Twitter.
First, Twitter’s 2009 trending topics:
Here are Facebook’s top status trends:
1. Diseases (Swine Flu) Scare the Hell Out of Us
The #3 trend on Facebook? Swine Flu. The #2 and #6 news trends on Twitter? Swine Flu. The #4 Hashtag on Twitter in 2009? Yep, you guessed it, #swineflu. When it first burst onto the scene, our propensity for panic took over. We questioned if this was the next epidemic, reminiscent of the 1918 Influenza Pandemic that killed 50 to 100 million people.
As we all now know, we dodged a bullet, for H1N1 proved not to be any more deadly than most common flu variants. It still is a dominant discussion topic today though, as H1N1 has spread across the world. The CDC estimates that nearly 50 million Americans have contracted H1N1 and killed 10,000. There is a reason why it was the biggest long-term story of the year.
2. Want a Blockbuster Movie? Sci-fi/Fantasy Is the Way to Go
If you wanted to make a splash at the box office in 2009, you didn’t create an action thriller, a comedy, or a drama. No, you created a sci-fi or fantasy epic.
Out of the top ten Twitter trending movies, nine of them fell into the sci-fi or fantasy genres. Nine. The only one that doesn’t have anything to do with magic, vampires, weird suits, or aliens is Slumdog Millionaire. The only movie on the Facebook side that wasn’t sci-fi was The Hangover.
The box office numbers agree: Transformers and Harry Potter top the list with $402 million and $301 million total grosses each, with Twilight, Star Trek, Monsters Vs. Aliens, and X-Men all in the top ten 2009s grosses.
This was clearly the year of the sci-fi film. It’s even more fitting that Avatar is December 2009’s big film. Don’t expect this trend to let up over the next few years either: Twilight, Transformers, Star Trek, andHarry Potter all have a few sequels left in the tank (and a perfect market for my sci-fi novel).
3. Trends Reflect Differences Between Facebook and Twitter Users
First, let’s understand that Twitter and Facebook used different methodologies to come up with their top trends lists. Twitter’s top trends are likely based on words and phrases appeared the most as Twitter trending topics, while Facebook grouped together related phrases and put more emphasis on “bursts of activity” and percentage changes from 2008 to 2009.
Yet the result is still that we can see some stark differences between what Facebook and Twitter users like to do with their time and what’s on their minds. Here are some of my random observations:
- Facebook is still about personal connections: The fact that family ranks so high indicates that more mothers and fathers have joined the service, mostly to connect with their friends and their kids. The fact that religion popped up as a top trend supports this assertion.
- NFL dominated Fb and Twitter: The Super Bowl appeared on the top 2009 Twitter trend list not once, but twice. The Steelers were a top trend on Facebook.
- Facebookers like baseball, Twitter users like basketball? Well, the Yankees dominated the Facebook discussion just as much as the Steelers did, and on the Twitter side, the Lakers were the #2 sports trend and Koe Bryant was the #4 most discussed person in 2009. More likely, it’s just that basketball games have more tweetable moments than baseball games.
- The #IranElection Crisis was a singular event that Facebook didn’t have: This is probably because Twitter users potentially had the power to change the course of events in Tehran by helping their fellow users in Iran. It was a powerful message and one of Twitter’s watershed moments. Facebook definitely didn’t have an event that compared to it.
- How the hell is Lady Gaga not a top Twitter trend? Seriously, was Joe Wilson, A-Rod, and Chuck Norris more discussed than perhaps this year’s fastest rising music star? Maybe Facebook’s trend analysis was more accurate, or maybe Twitter users really just didn’t care about her. But they did care about Susan Boyle… very much.
4. This Year’s Big Technology Wasn’t Google Wave, It Was Twitter
If you look at the top technology trend on Twitter in 2009, you’ll find that Google Wave dominated the list. That makes sense – it was one of the most hyped and anticipated products of the year, and it still continues to gain attention (and requests for invites). Wave was groundbreaking technology, regardless of whether or not it goes mainstream.
Yet Google Wave wasn’t the technology of the year. Neither was Facebook, although I’d give it a very close second. No, it was Twitter and its emergence as a mainstream platform for communication. Even Facebook’s memology report acknowledges the microblogging service’s profound impact on society.
Think all the way back to December 2008. Do you remember what Twitter looked like then? It was a smaller group of early adopters tweeting back and forth, with a few stars like Ashton Kutcher thrown into the mix. It had only 4-5 million U.S. visitors back then.
Then Twitter broke through into the mainstream consciousness. Oprah, Ellen, Ashton vs. CNN, andquadruple digit growth made it the subject of intense media attention. Then media outlets and businesses started latching onto the platform when the realized that it was an incredibly powerful promotional platform and communication tool. Nearly every media outlet has one, as do many companies.
Twitter trends may not have picked itself up as a top trend, but it really was. It scared Facebook enough to change. It became a regular part of U.S. and world culture. Hell, Twitter was even the word of the year. Its momentum may be stalling now, but the 140 character revolution clearly dominated 2009.

Hong Kong Rules Twitter in Asia

We just did a bit of light-hearted research on Twitter in Asia which shows Hong Kong rules on Twitter.
Singapore is vying for second, followed at a distance by Malaysia and then China.
Now for the Caveats: The measurement is how many people follow the top 3 most followed Twitterers in each market - as found via Twitterholic.
Yes, this is a wildly unscientific and flawed measurement, but we enjoyed it.
Just updated China top 3 list to include @isaac and knock out my own account. Any other corrections welcome! My Twitter account made the list as a top 3 Twitterer in China, but would not make the list in Hong Kong!
Who are the top 3 most followed Twitterers in each market? See list below.
