Influencers: How Trends Become Contagious

This is a really nice short film from R+I Creative that documents how trends and creativity can become contagious in the real world. From music to fashion and entertainment to advertising.
The film attempts to understand the essence of influence, what makes a person influential and all without taking a statistical or metric approach! Written and Directed by Paul Rojanathara and Davis Johnson, the film is a Polaroid snapshot of New York influential creatives who are shaping today’s pop culture. It’s 13 minutes long, but well worth a watch with your morning coffee!

Email, portals stay ahead of social networking—at least on mobile devices

AUGUST 13, 2010

Social networking has become such a staple of online activity in the US that, according to Nielsen, internet users spent more time on social networking sites and blogs than doing any other activity in June 2010. Games, which came in second, took up less than half as much time.
On the mobile internet, however, more traditional activities still reign. Email dominated the mobile picture even more strongly than social networking did the desktop: If all time spent on the mobile web was condensed into a single hour, US internet users would have spent 25 minutes in June checking email. Portals would have received another 7 minutes, with social networks not far behind.

Nielsen reported that social networking has been closing the gap in time spent on the mobile internet, gaining share since last year as portals dropped in importance over the same period.
But email remains one of the most popular mobile internet activities not just by time spent but also by penetration. According to the Pew Internet & American Life Project, 34% of all US mobile subscribers used email on their phone in May 2010, compared with 23% who used a social networking site.
comScore also reported mobile email usage via a browser ahead of social networking. That research found search had the highest penetration of any mobile browsing activity, but search is less time-intensive than email or social sites.

Social should continue to make gains in the mobile realm, however. comScore reported it was the fastest-growing mobile internet activity between 2009 and 2010, rising 80% in usage, while email grew more slowly. Bridge Ratings predicted in June that mobile social networking would grow twice as quickly as email during the next 12 months.
The growing penetration of smartphones will be a key factor in increased mobile social networking. According to comScore, 53% of smartphone users participated in social networking activities on the go, compared with just 11% of feature phone owners.

Creating Buzzworthy Topics

Andy Sernovitzentrepreneur and author, recently put on a Word of Mouth Conference in Chicago with lots of great sessions and case studies. Summaries of the presentations can be found here.
My talk was on Creating Buzzworthy Topics. The format for this session was challenging because we had only 20-minutes to share business-ready practical word of mouth marketing advice. Some of the practical advice I shared included:
(1) Buzz doesn't create evangelists. Evangelists create buzz.
(2) Three ways businesses can spark long-lasting word of mouth.
(3) A company's personality is its best form of advertising.
(4) Using a basic Improv Comedy rule can infuse "personality" into a business.
You can read the summary of my talk or ... you can watch it in fullYour call.

Internet Video Publishing Advice, Best Practices and Tips

Mark R Robertson   |   December 4, 2009
Last month, I had the pleasure of speaking on several panels at PubCon 2009, an industry trade show put on by WebMasterWorld that is programmed specifically for web professionals and website site owners. My favorite, was a session titled, ”Best Practices for Video Creation, Integration and Marketing” where I presented along with our friends Gregory Markel of Infuse Creative and Michael McDonald of  WebProNews.
I was asked to cover how best to integrate internet video within your website and I discussed everything from file formats and players to hosting (self-hosting, online video platforms,”social video platforms”) to general best practices for internet video publishing.  Below is my presentation – enjoy

Top 10 Viral Videos - November 2009

Internet videos created to promote mobile homes, chewing gum, beer and tech products are high on the list of the top-10 viral and up-and-coming-viral campaigns selected by video-content distributor Goviral as the most interesting and innovative in November 2009.
The videos on the list - which continue to reflect the global potential of online video, are primarily focused on food/beverage products and technology in the run-up to the holiday season. As in previous months, they employ a variety of approaches to grab and hold viewers’ attention - including using natural imagery, pop-culture and sports references, music, Christmas icons, and the comic creation of “chaos and joy in public places.”
As was also case with the top viral videos in October 2009, the videos, which were produced on various continents, continue to highlight the international nature of viral video and illustrate how various companies are using these vehicles to build global brand awareness that attempts to span cultures and ethnicities.
